Vocational Task Analysis

Students with developmental disabilities often have difficulty with sequencing skills. They often need visual supports while working on a vocational task.

This adaptive support needs to be based on a task analysis that breaks down the total vocational task into smaller, easier to manage subtasks.

Our brains seem to be hard-wired to perform sorting tasks. Most of us will find ourselves engaged in some type of sorting task each day as we manage our lives.

People with developmental disabilities often demonstrate an ability to sort objects into groups of objects based on such things as size, color and shape.

Currently, as part of our need to recycle disposable items in order to preserve natural resources, opportunities for employment arise for people with developmental disabilities, in which that seemingly innate human need to sort things, can be directed toward tasks that result in employment.

The following flow chart is a simple visual support that breaks down the task of returning bottles and cans to a recycle center. The chart uses the Pops Spedster Model color system as a visual support for the cognitive processes of "Go", "Slow (continue)" and "Stop".
