One common behavior problem faced by people with developmental disabilities involves their teasing each other. In the Adaptive Life Skills classroom culture, many times, students are placed with the same group of peers year after year. Students get to know each others' "buttons" and derive excitement out of pushing those buttons (just like their peers who have no disabilities). One behavioral support is the adaptive feedback card, a card that addresses the targeted behavior and requires the student to check in daily (or hourly) with staff and determine whether or not that student has engaged in any teasing behavior. ASK THE STUDENT TO CARRY THE CARD IN A POCKET ON THE STUDENT'S PERSON. WHEN STAFF NOTICES THE STUDENT TEASING SOMEONE, ASK THE STUDENT TO PRODUCE THE CARD FOR STAFF EVALUATION. Here is an example of such a card. To use and print it, right click on the image and either save it or print it.
Staff should circle the thumbs up or thumbs down section for each time a measurement is taken, and cross out the section that is opposite of the behavior being measured. Dates or times can be written next to the circled section.
