The Pops Spedster's Mission

 

Pops Spedster And Company recognize the need for adaptive materials that are individualized to meet the appropriate developmental needs of people who learn best in adaptive life skill settings. Our mission is to provide information about and instructional materials for community-based settings that include adaptive supports and accommodations for individuals with intellectual impairments resulting from low incidence and acquired disabilities. The majority of the materials you will find at Pop Spedster's are designed for people with disabilities that profoundly affect an individual's ability to participate in and to benefit from common life experiences.

What is Developmentally Appropriate Instruction (DAI)?

The Pops Spedster internet site uses Developmentally Appropriate Instruction (DAI) to deliver educational content to students with special needs resulting from developmental issues, to the parents of these students and to the care providers and case managers who work with both.
DAI is based on a theory that more effective learning takes place when those who are delivering instruction, have assessed and determined any skill sets associated with that student’s preferences, strengths and abilities. When these are known, goals can be set for each individual student which will help to maintain that student’s existing strengths and abilities in terms of the student’s personal preferences, and will build on those to increase the effectiveness of that student’s learning process. When this learning process begins to evidence the presence of newly acquired, measurable skill sets, individualized levels of mastery for these skills can be formulated and agreed upon by IEP teams for each goal.
When goals are based on a Common Core Standard, new goals related to each standard can next be set that will develop into new skill sets for that student to work on while that student is still perfecting mastery of the existing skills agreed upon.
In all cases, developing goals will take into consideration the individual student's barriers to learning that may exist due to the nature of that individual’s domain(s) of special need, as determined through the use of research-based methods.
